Such a pleasure to test a 3.0 USB Flash Drive while it is still rare on the market and it represent only 1% of users’ keys. No huge shape such as the La Cie – FastKey. The JetFlash 700 is very classic as far as ergonomics are concerned, it simply goes into a pocket.
Here, we deal with a 3.0 USB Flash Drive. For those who don’t know the difference between 2.0 and 3.0 USB, I invite you to read this Wikipedia page. As a short axplanation, the 3.0 USB is faster than the 2.0 USB (600 MB/s vs 60 MB/s in theory). But be cautious : so as to take advantage of this speed, your computer must have a 3.0 USB port besides your 3.0 USB Flash Drive.
Let’s talks about figures now, since we obviously expected this Transcend key to deal with high performances !
Here is what the constructive announced :
Read 53 MByte/s, Write 15 MByte/s (8GB);
Read 70 MByte/s, Write 20 MByte/s (16GB)
Now, considering our tests, here are the speeds measured on a 694 MB and a 16 Go key :
Write average speed : 19,82 MB/s (high up to 21 MB/s)
Read average speed : 60,84 MB/s (high up to 66 MB/s)
I consciously put the high speeds in the title of the article, and put in the characteristics below the average speed of the 2GO file transfer. This speed is weaker but it represents the minimal guaranteed, whatever the transfered files may be.
Here are the speeds measured according to our reference folder
This 2 GO file is made up of 343 files (audio, video, pictures, documents, programs) shared out between 19 folders.
What’s happenning happened for a lot of keys :
Write average speed : 10 MB/s
Read average speed : 29MB/s
This is very disappointing for 3.0 USB, as far as numerous files transfer is concerned. We ran the test three times on the key connected to the 3.0 USB port (knowing that the firmware of the parent card and of the 3.0 USB chipset were the newest).
As far as big files (and small ones obviously) are concerned, i.e. 99% of our use of a key, performances are very good ones.
The official data sheet is available here. The key has a life-guarantee and is compatible with Windows, Linux & Mac
